Rihanna and Jim Parsons children’s movie “Home” moved to the top spot at the box office this weekend with the animated feature bringing in $54 million and putting it in first place. The numbers surpassed the previous expectations for the film. The movie was expected to debut in the mid-$30 million range. Rihanna voices the character of Tip, who is a young girl who befriends an outcast alien (Mr. Parsons).
The movie “Get Hard,” staring Will Ferrell who plays a man who is preparing to go to prison with the help of a businessman played by comedian Kevin Hart, came in second place at 34.6 million. “Insurgent” went to third place in its second week of release which has grossed $86.4 million so far. “Home” is the second children’s movie to do well this year with “The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water” collecting $160 million since its release in February. According to the CinemaScore market research firm, audiences gave “Home” an “A” grade while “Get Hard” received a “B.” Next week’s box-office news is expected to be dominated by “Furious 7,” which is the latest installment of the franchise. Box-office analysts are saying it could set an opening record in April.
